Openreach And CWU Urge Vehicle Checks

Openreach has asked the Health, Safety & Environment Committee to remind Branches of the need for members
who drive to carry our vehicle checks.

The message is:

Do you drive an Openreach vehicle? If you do then you should be carrying out your daily vehicle checks to make sure it’s fit for the road. If you don’t, then you risk the chance of points on your licence and a fine if stopped by VOSA or the police, and potentially costing Openreach it’s vehicle operator’s licence, and most important of all, causing a serious accident.

To help with improving standards right across Openreach, 6 transport auditors are out and about assisting drivers and managers with VOSA compliance by checking vehicles and recording defects on FPQ using two new AMS checklists 988 (vehicle) & 989 (trailers).

To date they’ve found over 150 defects in Openreach vehicles, common defects include:-

·         Are all tyres inflated to the correct pressures?
·         Is the vehicle’s cab clean and tidy?
·         Is the vehicle’s “Next Service” card fitted?

Platform Elevating drivers are particularly at risk of an overloaded vehicle, especially if fully fuelled and carrying a passenger; remember to only carry the kit you need to operate the unit for one day.

Take a second to think, is your vehicle really meeting the standards? If it isn’t, then you need to take the time now to remedy any outstanding defects as soon as possible.
